You know, I get that nowadays most of Animal Crossing Nook Miles Ticket us recognize Ike and Marth as having completely different playstyles, but as a participant who started out sometimes playing Brawl at my friend's house, I had a lot of trouble telling apart Marth out of Ike. With Byleth, even casuals can tell them apart thanks to their powerful bow, lance, Warlock Punch-like down special, and alts, but as a complete casual, the one thing I remembered about Ike and Marth from using them at Subspace was that one of them felt stronger and a bit more fun.
Even though Ike is not a Marth clone, I think it can be trying for absolute casuals who have only played them to pronounce what makes them distinct. I think Sakurai realized that, which is why he chose to go with Robin as the brand new FE rep for Smash 4 instead of Chrom and not one of those non-echo FE characters have relied entirely on sword moves since then.
The change to older Ike in Smash4 also helped to differentiate him visually from Marth. I truly don't know why they made youthful Ike the default option in Ultimate (although I like his young layout better).
Forum-style is honestly much better in certain ways. I truly hate how smash information is currently distributed in various WordPress threads in which you need to adhere to the right number of individuals to even access and you also can't get or read good longform discussion. Looking for old info on twitter is also a massive pain in the ass.
I had been about when the Brawl dojo was a thing and recall a great deal of the parting from Brawl's hayday. The largest turnaround for me has ever been Subspace, it had been broadly despised back in the day but today it seems popular.
People are always the same but the context changes. Back then, we didn't have the history of nintendo and nintendo universes clashing because we do today. Back then folks will see both completely different genres and be hesitant about cross overs. Obviously we view it as ridiculous now but perhaps back then we would see it with caution.
Something you will notice very quickly if you look is that it was never about the swords, they simply needed their sword fighter. The clearest case in point is individuals begging for Dante because he's a cool edgy character and putting down the sword fighters we all get because they are anime, which can be bad and lame because it's anime.
As a Dante supporter, I really dont like that he's the go to choice for everyone to phone a"swordfighter". Yes he has a sword, but it's not his only method of fighting; he uses firearms, transforms into a demon, even has a bike and guitar, etc.. He's far more diverse than every swordfighter we've gotten (such as Byleth, they at least tried and made her an actually unique fighter). Just like 5 of his motions use the sword, all of his various weapons have roughly equivalent use. Dante is far beyond being a swordfighter, also would be an excellent and buy Animal Crossing Items really unique character in Smash.
