The full form of MLA is the Modern Language Association, and it is an organization that focuses on language, as well as literature. This is a precise way for citing, following the MLA guidelines or principles. MLA format is often used for language, literature, liberal arts, and other humanities subjects. The MLA Handbook is in its 8th edition, as well as standardizes the way scholars use to cite their sources and format their research papers. When every person similarly documents their sources or papers, it is humble to recognize, as well as understand the types of sources that are used for a project. Depending on the kind of information you include in your work, citations are positioned in the body of your project, and all are included in a “Works Cited” list, at the end of your assignment.
The MLA citation includes the following information. These are the name of the author, title of the source, title of container, other contributors, version, numbers, publisher, publication date and location. The format for MLA citation should be in hanging style. The basic format and its example are shown below.
“Author’s Last name, First name. “Title of Source.” Title of Container, other contributors, version, numbers, publisher, publication date, location”.
The heading of the reference page should be titled as ‘work cited‘ and not the other words such as reference list, bibliography and others.
Name of the authors:
The name of the authors is generally the first item in the citation unless the source does not have the author. The name of the author is followed by the period. If there is one author in the source, then the name of the author should be written as a surname, first name; for example, Lee, Harper or Fitzgerald, F. Scott. If there are two authors, then it can be written as Monsen, Avery, and Jory John. For three or more authors, it will only include the first listed author’s name, and then it will add ‘et al.’ it can be mentioned here that if there is no mention of the name of the author, then you should skip the name section.
Titles and Containers:
In this MLA citation, the title has followed the name of the author, and it is mentioned here that, the title should be in capital letter. If you are citing a source in its entirety, such as a movie, a full book, or a music album, then place the title in italics. As an example,
Franzen, Jonathan. The Corrections. Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2001.
Nasar, Sylvia. A Beautiful Mind: The Life of Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash. Simon and Schuster, 2001.
The citation of two containers can be cited or formatted in this following format. You can follow this format if there are two containers.
Author’s Last name, First name. “Title of Source.” Title of Container, other contributors, version, numbers, Publisher, publication date, location. Title of Second Container, Other contributors, version, number, Publisher, publication date, location.
In MLA citing, when other individuals (besides the author) play a substantial role in your research, include them in this section of the citation. Start this part of the citation with the individual’s role, followed by the word “by”. You can follow this following example.
Gaitskill, Mary. “Twilight of the Superheroes.” The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction: 50 North American Stories Since 1970, edited by Lex Williford and Michael Martone, Simon and Schuster, 2012, pp. 228-238.
The Incredibles. Directed by Brad Bird, produced by John Walker, Pixar, 2004.
Sources can come in different versions. There are numerous bible versions, books can come in versions, such as numbered editions, and even songs and movies can have special versions. You can understand it by the following examples.
The Bible. Lexham English Version, Logos, 2011, lexhamenglishbible.com.
Afrojack. “Take Over Control.” Beatport, performance by Eva Simons, extended version, 2011, https://myassignmenthelp.co.uk/blog/how-to-write-literary-analysis-essay/.
Crank, J. The Mathematics of Diffusion. 2nd ed., Clarendon, 1979.
Any number that is related to a source and it is not the publication date, version number or page range; then it should be placed in the location of the number of the citation. It includes volume and issue numbers for volume, journal articles, or series numbers for books, television episode numbers, and comic book numbers, to name some. You can understand it by the following examples.
Jingjing, Wang, and Zhai Xiaojuan. “Improving Relationships between Users and Libraries: A Survey of American Academic Libraries.” The Electronic Library, vol. 39, no. 5, 2015, pp. 507-616. Publishers:
The publisher does the production of the source. It is placed in the citation previously the date of publication of the material. Include the publisher for any source type excluding for websites when the name of the publisher is the same as the name of the source. When sources of the material have more than one publisher that share responsibility for the production of the source, place a slash between the names of the publishers. As an example, you can use the abbreviation of the name of the press in the citation. You may write PP when the name of the publisher includes Penguin Publisher.
Publication Dates:
At the time of including the date that the source is published, display the amount of information that is found on the source, whether it is the full date, the month and year, or just the year. In terms of presentation, it does not include substance if the date is written in a specific order. Make sure to use the same format for all citations. For example, you can write the date as 2 Nov. 2016 or Nov. 2, 2016.
Locations:
The location mentions to the place where the basis or source can be found. It can be in the form of a page number, URL, physical place, or disc number. For page numbers, use the abbreviation p. when only referring to one page, and pp. for a range of pages.
It can be mentioned here that at the time of in-texting, you only write the surname of the author and it should not include any year citation like the other citations.
