GARROSH HELLSCREAM AND THE HEART OF Y’SHAARJ (MISTS OF PANDARIA)
The Mists of Pandaria expansion brought a full new vibe to World of Warcraft. Deathwing was dead, and it had been time to go to the land of the Pandaren — peaceful panda people with a Chinese-inspired aesthetic.

The final battles and raids are cool for long-term players, because it occupies two areas that have always been safe and turns them into battlefields. But irrespective of how fondly players remember the fight, the death of Garrosh will always be a sour note.

After the raid, players imprisoned Garrosh, but he escaped back in time. During the story of the following expansion, Thrall — often negatively observed as “green Jesus” — killed Garrosh during a missable cutscene, making the raid fight against one in all World of Warcraft’s first original villains feel pointless.

ARCHIMONDE (WARLORDS OF DRAENOR)
The Warlords of Draenor took the player back to Draenor of the Burning Expeditionary Army. Draenor was still lush, and the Burning Legion was uninhabited. The expansion’s main story followed the Orc leaders of old, rising up using technology from the player timeline — because of a time-traveling Garrosh.

But the ultimate boss of the expansion is Archimonde in the attack of Hellfire Castle, another demon general of Warcraft 3-who also appeared as the boss in the battle of the burning Crusades on Mount Hyjal. But Archimonde didn’t feel right because the final fight. Many of Draenor's warlords never shipped, which caused Archimonde's "Hellfire Citadel" raid to feel disconnected.

Grommash Hellscream — Garrosh’s father and another hero from Warcraft 3 — gave the look of he’d be a giant bad at the beginning of World of Warcraft Classic Gold the expansion. But with the cut content, he went from villain to hero instantly. And players went from fighting Orcs to fighting an enormous, pale demon.

In step with Blizzard, demons can only truly die inside the Twisting Nether, which is how Archimonde came back in Warlords of Draenor, and the way players finally defeated him.

But during a lore interview, Blizzard employees were still toying thereupon idea after players supposedly ended Archimonde permanently, and discussing if they wanted to take care of it as canon. For lore fans, the inconsistency of the Twisting Nether idea is endlessly frustrating. And because it stands, nobody really knows if Archimonde is dead or not — not even Blizzard.

It’s possible the intended threads for Warlords of Draenor could have led to a coherent shift from Orcs to demons, and built up more concrete lore for the ultimate fight. But with only three raids worth of content, we are going to never know.
